Hello from #FOSDEM26!

We're excited to share that we have just $$26,594 left to raise in our match challenge!

We're in the stand at FOSDEM today, keeping track of the number, so you can give online or even just give some cash in person and we'll keep updating the number throughout the day!

Donations made to lower that number will be doubled!! Can we get to our goal here at #FOSDEM?

Tracy and Karen are pointing towards a sign that says "Your donation matched! Left to go: $26,594, with a higher number crossed out.

For those of you following along at home, we learned on our way to the courthouse today that due to the court's busy schedule, our pre-trial conference was again delayed. We'll keep you all posted as we know more.

We expect the new trial date to be set at that hearing and the judge may also hear some of the motions that the parties are allowed to make right before trial (called "motions in limine"). We're disappointed that trial hasn't already begun and that today's hearing was canceled, but we understand a busy schedule!

@muelli asked re: hearing tomorrow. The trial is *not* tomorrow (see https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2026/jan/09/delay-in-start-of-vizio-trial/ & https://sfconservancy.org/docs/2026-01-08-12-02-PST_ROA-706_30-2021-01226723-CU-BC-CJC_Leal-Minute-Order_certified-by-clerk.pdf ).
There *is* a hearing on motions in limine & scheduling conference though.

The hearing is open to the public. Anyone in Orange County, CA area can come to 700 W Civic Center Dr. Read up on what's allowed in court, but laptops & mobile devices are ok.

Hearing starts 9AM in Room C33, on Floor 9.

There will also likely be remote access; we'll post details in morning.

Our new Sustainer tshirt design was created by the amazing https://www.instagram.com/artericafort/

You can see her prototyping the design in these videos!

Be sure to become a Sustainer before Feburary 5th so your donation is doubled and you can get one of the swanky new designs ;)

We've successfully completed our original match 🥳 And thanks to two anonymous donors, we're extending the match by $40,012 and going until February 5th.

Thank you to everyone who helped us meet our original goal, and we're so thrilled to be able to stretch and raise even more for software freedom!

Any Sustainership or donation made by February 5th will be doubled:

@cymplecy Thank you so much, that's so generous! You can use this page to donate via Paypal for whatever amount you can:

https://sfconservancy.org/donate/

Please reach out if you have any problems there.

Please help us out in the last few days of our fundraiser! We have to raise just another $52k to meet our generous matches to reach our target to keep this organization going. Please help: https://sfconservancy.org/sustainer/

If you want to read more about the details of the delay, you can find that on our blog: https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2026/jan/09/delay-in-start-of-vizio-trial/

Unfortunately, due to a conflict in the court's schedule, the judge has delayed the #Vizio trial and it will not be starting on Monday. It's disappointing news, but hopefully it will be scheduled soon! We'll keep you all posted as we get more information.

Happy New Years! We're so thankful for all our incredible supporters and cannot wait to fight for even more software freedom this year.

We've got 2 weeks left in our fundraiser and $77,608 to go. Becoming a Sustainer is the best way to support us, small nonprofits like us rely on monthly donors. And by supporting us at $10 a month (or more 😉) you get our limited edition annual tshirt!

Dear ,

Thanks for your efforts, both as individuals and as an organization, to support the FLOSS community and also those that don't realize the benefits they get from your work

I appreciate all that I have learned from you over the years`and look forward to future growth directly due to your efforts

Also, thanks for defending FLOSS rights and practices and being willing to do the hard work for the legal challenges

@bkuhn @conservancy @karen @outreachy Hi ! I'm catching up on recent fediverse discussions about the GPL and the right to install modified software. If I buy a device with GPLv2 firmware, does the license require that the manufacturer provide a way to load customized firmware? Often firmware loading will be protected (e.g. cryptographic signature) so I can't run customized firmware on the device even if the source code is available.

Greetings fediverse-ians! We're ( @karen @bkuhn @ossguy and @conservancy ) are here to answer your questions about #SFC, software freedom, @outreachy or any other things you might have on your mind :)

Be sure to tag us and use #SFC !

Today we'll be doing some live Q&As on the Fediverse! Join us at 10am ET (UTC-5) with SFC staff @karen @bkuhn and @ossguy

Use the hashtag #SFC or tag them or us!

What are you up to the next two days?

Hopefully one of those times is convenient in your timezone.

Did you know that caused the deaths of seven diabetics this year?

Some of Abbott's continuous glucose monitor (ironically named the 3 Plus) incorrectly reported low blood sugar — a grave & dangerous error for insulin-dependent . I fortunately wasn't injured, but Abbott's refusal to allow public examination the technical details of their devices is tantamount to a cover-up.
